Marakwet Organic Farm practices traditional barkcloth making as part of its agroforestry and cultural preservation work. The barkcloth is produced from sustainably grown ficus (mutuba) trees, which are carefully managed within the farm’s cocoa-based agroforestry system. The trees are not cut down; instead, the bark is harvested in a controlled manner, allowing the tree to regenerate naturally. This practice aligns with the farm’s organic and environmental principles.
The barkcloth production process is led by an experienced Barkcloth Specialist with over 12 years of hands-on experience, ensuring quality, authenticity, and proper traditional methods. After harvesting, the bark is softened, beaten, and stretched using wooden mallets until it forms a strong, flexible fabric. The final barkcloth is sun-dried and prepared for use without chemical treatment.
At EMOF, barkcloth serves multiple purposes. It is produced for cultural, artistic, fashion, interior décor, and tourism-related products, linking agriculture with heritage and creative enterprise. The activity also provides skills development and income opportunities for local community members while promoting indigenous knowledge. Barkcloth making complements cocoa farming, livestock keeping, and tree planting, making it part of the farm’s integrated and sustainable production system.
